Nell (1994) Jodie Foster \u0026 Liam Neeson

It was all incredibly real, and that's rare. I was in awe the whole time. The cinematography is utterly gorgeous. Normally visuals don't carry much weight with me, but even I couldn't help but notice.

And the music, while simple, was so weighty and effective. This is not a movie for people who are bored unless there's fighting and explosions and such.

This is a thoughtful movie. It's about people, their life experiences, and how they deal with and are shaped by those experiences.

Many reviewers would have you think 'Nell' is about language, about the phenomenon of "idioglossia". Trust me, that's NOT what this movie is about.

Yes, that may be the framework for the story, and "Idioglossia" is the name of the play on which this is based, but that's not what 'Nell' is about.

Simply put, the story of 'Nell' is a story of two of the most basic and yet most profound of human experiences — love and loss.

For two hours we are given a window into the lives of these characters, watching them as they help one another deal with these two matters together.

I won't say any more about the plot because I would hate to spoil anything for someone reading this, but I will add one more thing.

Rarely have I seen an end to a movie that so simply, effectively, and profoundly reflects on a human being's experience of love and loss.

My rating of an 8 in no way implies that I found flaws with this movie. When you reach a certain level of quality in art it becomes simply a matter of preference.

In my scale, 9 and 10 are generally reserved for movies of certain genres and certain subjects. Therefore, I would not argue one bit with someone who gave this movie a perfect score.

The two decide that Nell should be shown a little of the world, and they make the decision to bring Nell into town.

While in town, Nell befriends Mary, Todd's depressed wife, but also encounters some raunchy boys in a pool hall until Jerry gets her out.

With increased intrusion by the press, Jerry and Paula take Nell to a hospital for her protection. There, Nell becomes extremely despondent and unresponsive.

Jerry removes her from the hospital and hides her in a hotel. Paula joins him, and the two admit that they love each other.

At the court hearing the next day, Al, who wants to study Nell in a controlled environment, delivers his opinion that Nell has Asperger syndrome and belongs in an institution.

Nell then comes forward and, with Jerry interpreting, speaks for herself. Five years later, Jerry and Paula bring their daughter, Ruthie, to visit Nell in her house.

It is Nell's birthday, and friends surround her. Production took place in North Carolina, including the town of Robbinsville and the city of Charlotte.

Nell received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who praised the cast but criticised the screenplay. Foster received widespread praise for her performance.

The Washington Post ' s review noted that "Jodie Foster, transcendent in the bravura title role, is far grander than the film itself, and her performance helps camouflage the weaknesses of its structure and the naivete of its themes.

Foster's intense, accomplished performance in the title role holds much surprise. The wild-child story of 'Nell' unfolds in unexpectedly predictable ways, clinging fiercely to the banal thought that Nell's innocence makes her purer than anyone else in the story.

The site's consensus states: "Despite a committed performance by Jodie Foster, Nell opts for ponderous melodrama instead of engaging with the ethical dilemmas of socializing its titular wild child.

His family Nell TMDb Score. Jodie Foster in perfect Oscar-bait mode gave a very believable, often unrecognizable rendition of her, stripping of the intelligence, psychology and measured calculations of Clarice Starling a role that launched her A-list status in Hollywood and ably portrayed the deficiency of her actions resulted by lack of social exposure, and the uncommon depths and purity of her heart brought forth by not being able to do so.

Liam Neeson was quite good though a bit stiff, I may say as the concerned Dr. Lovell, a character that, along with Nell herself, formed the film's primary emotional connection whose slow development was very prevalent throughout.

Yes, "Nell" is a pure tear-jerker for the easily touched, but for the more experienced film-goer that has gone through and endured so much Hollywood cheese, 'tears' is never impossible, but an almost otherworldly 'sob' is quite pushing it.

Which brings me to my personal conflict as to "what will be the real reason if ever I let out a tear for the film? Or will it be a genuine thump into my heart regarding Liam Neeson's struggles to cope up with her real-life wife Natasha Richardson's who played Paula Olsen in the film untimely death?

Seeing them all happy and hugging and kissing each other in the film makes me lean on the latter more. At some point, it's also about the doctors themselves.

And as what Richard Libertini's character Dr. Paley stated a quote that lingered with me long after the film has ended : "Even caring has an ulterior motive".

Beyond all our aspirations to help others, to give meaning to other less fortunate people's lives, is an unconscious, buried search for our own and an impulse to internally conform with how other people may view us.

Paley followed it up with the claim that even Mother Teresa's unconditional caring in Calcutta is truly a mission for her existential re-assurance.

That may be debatable, but the film's clear and considerable articulacy of the sociological human condition clearly isn't.

Ivan D Super Reviewer. Nov 06, This movie was so good! Foster was so convincing in her role, and Neeson and Richardson were perfect picks for their characters.

It was so touching and sad at times , and I found myself mesmerized by Foster's character, Nell. Erin C Super Reviewer.

Aug 08, How in the hell did Jodie Foster seriously get an Oscar nomination for this, possibly the weirdest film to ever be taken seriously on the public stage?

I mean, I get the message of the film overall: the fact that those who are alternative don't stand a chance in a society that prides itself on revealing the hidden truths everywhere they may be hiding.

Still, does anyone really want to stand up and say that Foster's performance as the nearly mute, and very animalistic Nell, is great, or even remotely realistic?

She looks so hair brained, that a parody performance would be unrecognizable compared to this film. I mean seriously, in what universe is this okay?

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson make an interesting duo as the scientists who evaluate Nell, but besides that there is no sense, honesty, or truth in any of these performances.

It's bland, while also being hyper animated with the feral yowls of its lead, and the strange fight for privacy that stirs the story.

Seriously, it's not even good for a bad movie; it's just pure gross cheesiness. Spencer S Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews.

One of the great movies of modern times is Francois Truffaut's "The Wild Child" (), about a child who is found living like an animal in the woods, and becomes the ward of a doctor who hopes to educate him. Beautiful movie.
